Getting started — quick setup, best practices, safety checklist

Welcome — getting started

This guide walks you through initial setup, core security choices, and how to get your Ledger device ready for managing Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. Follow each step carefully — the recovery seed is your lifeline.

1

Unbox & verify

Inspect the package for tamper-evidence. If the box is opened, do not use the device — contact support. Ledger devices ship sealed and include a quick-start card.

2

Power on & create a new wallet

Power the device and follow on-screen prompts. Choose "Create a new wallet" to generate a fresh BIP-39 seed directly on the device. Never import a seed generated elsewhere unless you fully trust the source.

3

Write down your recovery phrase

Write the 24-word recovery phrase on the provided card or, better, on a metal backup plate. Keep it offline and store it in a secure place. If someone obtains this phrase, they control your funds.

4

Set a PIN & optional passphrase

Choose a strong PIN to protect physical access to the device. Consider enabling an additional passphrase for deniable wallets or separating accounts — remember, the passphrase is not recoverable if lost.

5

Install Ledger Live or connect to a compatible wallet

Install Ledger Live (official) or another trusted wallet interface. Use the provided USB cable and follow on-screen pairing. Ledger Live helps you manage accounts, apps, and firmware updates.

6

Verify addresses & sign a transaction

Always verify recipient addresses on the device screen before approving. The final approval must be physical — this prevents remote tampering of your payments.

FAQ

Can I restore my wallet on another device?
Yes — use your 24-word recovery phrase to restore on any compatible hardware wallet. If you used a passphrase, you'll need it to access the corresponding hidden wallet.
Is Ledger Live required?
No — Ledger Live is recommended for convenience. You can use many third-party wallets that support Ledger via standard transports like WebUSB or HID.
What if I lose my recovery phrase?
If you lose the recovery phrase and the device, you cannot recover funds. Always make at least two offline backups and store them securely.
